Celebrating our 80th birthday and 10th year Uptown   1928 – A Charlotte original, Reid’s Fine Foods is founded on Morehead Street by J. Arthur Reid. Meanwhile, Mickey Mouse makes his first animated appearance, and a U.S. postage stamp cost only two cents. 1931 – One year after air mail begins arriving in Charlotte, Reid’s moves to a new location on Providence Road. 1933 – Leroy Morrison is hired as a junior stock clerk. Morrison will later purchase Reid’s from his uncle, J. Arthur Reid. 1961 – As Stanford R. Brookshire begins his first of four terms as Mayor of Charlotte, Morrison hires Chuck Richards as a junior stock clerk. The population of Charlotte is 200,000 and, one year later, Charlotte begins jet airline service. 1984 – Chuck Richards buys Reid’s from Morrison. Reid’s also launches its Wine Shop and quickly becomes a destination for people seeking to enjoy wine. The experts at Reid’s make recommendations on food parings, help people find the perfect wine to match their taste and budget and host Wine Club events. 1989 – Reid’s Fine Foods puts out its first gift catalog, and construction begins on the Bank of America Corporate Center and the N.C. Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. 1998 – As Uptown booms, fueled by a record $2.2 billion investment in new and expanded businesses in Charlotte, Reid’s Fine Foods returns to the Center City and opens in Seventh Street Station – the first uptown grocery store in nearly 50 years. Reid’s also launches its full-service catering department, which provides meals for private parties, family gatherings and corporate events. 2008 – During Reid’s first ten years at Seventh Street Station, the Center City embraces the arrival of a new arena and the Charlotte Bobcats, a Johnson & Wales Campus, the Charlotte Trolley and LYNX light-rail service. The History of Reid's... Reid's moves to its Providence Road location in 1931. Chuck Richards joins Reid's as a clerk in 1961. He purchases the store in 1984. Reid's Wine Shop opens in 1984. Reid's returns to Uptown in 1998. Uptown booms during Reid's first 10 years at Seventh Street Station. The arrival of the LYNX light rail in 2007 was a much anticipated event.
